Fifth Week: Bring on the kitchen!

Rose is taking over the blog this week!

"This week in Just Bakery: we have made it to the kitchen and are learning to make the recipes, for example, cinnamon rolls and blueberry muffins.





We just did our classroom presentations from our ServSafe subject, which in general is about the safety and risks of an operation, which your'll conduct throughout a normal business day, from handwashing to food prep, temperatures, and storage. We have to be knowledgeable of foodborne pathogens, illnesses, and contamination preventative measures. We also need to know the standards, guidelines to follow, and regulations that must be met at the state and federal levels.





We are nearly halfway through the program already. I feel like we just started- time flies when your actively applying the things that you are learning and add to your existing knowledge. I'm already able to apply these things to my personal life, especially the Nutrition. We've been learning that there are many benefits to having a healthy balanced diet and the effects of what you put into your body, especially with nutrients. Nutrients are chemical compounds that, depending on what the individual who is doing the consuming and what their body needs. There are other factors that should be considered when managing/planning other people's dietary needs, like other health concerns, medications, and allergens. When you have an unbalanced diet regularly, it will have tremendous effects on your well-being, emotionally and physically. It can also be very harmful, so it's important to be informed on what is in the food you are eating: do you know what the item is made up of, where it was grown, and what nutrients your body will receive from it. I can now use all this information to eat healthier.


By the way, congratulations to Shawnna who graduated! Woohooo!!!! She is now a bonafied professional baker!



Finally, I would like to take time to give a shout out for our amazing instructors, Jaclyn and Sonja. Jaclyn for giving us the subjects and teach us our lessons. She's been able to break things down and make them comprehensive and easy to learn and follow what she's said. She is very much excited to be here with us everyday and to be there for us.



Sonja is our instructor in the kitchen portion of this program. She is the head of all that goes on in the magic process of baking those little tastes of heaven and home to our hearts and yours.

The only thing Rose missed in our busy busy week was that we got a special visit from the Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes on Monday! He heard about our program and wanted to come check it out and learn a little bit more of who we are and what we do. It was amazing to see the support of such an influential representative!
