"It's busy, busy, busy at Just Bakery as the holidays are fast approaching. Not only is the actual bakery busy preparing the many orders to be filled, but we as students are consumed with final exams and preparing for our Nutrition presentations.
Our second week in the kitchen has been anything but boring. From cut-out sugar cookies to cranberry orange quick bread (OMG, yum!), we not only created these goodies from start to finish- gathering ingredients, measuring, combining, baking), but we were also privileged enough to sample some of our creations. Sonja is an awesome instructor. I say this because even with the stress of the busy holiday season and the many orders considered, Sonja has been patient and helped us every step of the way.
Fresh ingredients are huge in the kitchen (artificial flavoring-what's that?!), and one skill I learned this week was how to zest an orange. Of course, when I saw this on the recipe for the quickbread, I automatically saw "zest of orange" and thought, "This sounds complicated!" Then Sonja showed us the process, and it wasn't nearly as time-consuming or difficult as my mind made it be. Such is life, right?!
The classroom portion of the Just Bakery program is wrapping up next week. So far we've completed management, and today we finished ServSafe by taking the online exam. Which means that Nutrition is the finale! Next week we will be presenting our nutrition projects and preparing for our last exam. Wish us luck!"
